CCC Key

CCC Keys centres on the Common Carrier Case, a costume pattern form Danz has worked with across various media since 2011. As with cosmograms and celestial diagrams — through which the too-complex and too-relational was made momentarily graspable — the Common Carrier Case uses the body to map what no single system of knowledge can fully hold. The perforations become constellations. The body becomes sky.

Miniature Common Carrier Case works gather around the central piece as talismans — “CCC keys”, seekies, held close and returned to. In their form they resemble votive offerings: each one a key, a repeated reaching toward something the body already knows.

CCC KEY features a soundscape in collaboration with artist Gediminas Žygus and with lighting design by Anton Filatov.

Mariechen Danz (Irish/German) studied at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin), the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam, and received an MFA from California Institute of the Arts in 2008. Her work encompasses sculptures, installations, performances, and costumes. Danz combines established systems of knowledge, used to understand and describe the world, with subjective, alternative, and magical perspectives. Anatomical models and organ representations often serve as metaphors for cultural, historical, and epistemic structures. Her works have been exhibited at venues including the 16th Istanbul Biennial, the 57th Venice Biennale, on the High Line in New York, at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kunsthaus Bregenz, and most recently in a solo exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie.

Danz’s work takes the transmission of knowledge as its starting point, placing the body at the center of her practice. In sculptures, drawings, costumes and installations - often made in collaboration with other artists and musicians - she calls into question the expressive capabilities and incapabilities of language, the legibility and hierarchy of signs, and the primacy of Western conceptions of reason. She hereby combines established systems of knowledge used to understand and describe the world with subjective, alternative and magical perspectives. Danz further activates her installations through staged vocal performances. The human body functions as the primary place of investigation for Danz’ work - the body as a metaphor, as origin and remains.
